Steph
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a Master's degree from the University of Illinois. Prior to private practice I provided therapy in a community mental health setting. I am also a military veteran and served from 2004-2013.
There are so many reasons people want to go to therapy: to learn more about themselves and their relationships, to process life events, to share things that are difficult to share with other people, to be vulnerable, or to explore how past experiences have shaped them. You don’t need to be in a crisis to benefit from therapy. It can be a wellness tool that is useful for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
My approach emphasizes mindfulness and self-compassion and I like to use polyvagal theory to look at ways our experiences impact our nervous systems. I am trained in Somatic and Attachment focused EMDR - effective for those who have experienced trauma. "Trauma" can be anything that significantly overwhelmed a person's nervous system.
I know from experience that seeking help and being vulnerable can be scary. If you feel like you want to give it a go (and you don't mind a therapist who sometimes curses, drinks a lot of coffee and can't stop buying office plants!) give me a call or shoot me an email. I would be happy to answer any questions you have or to set up a first time appointment.
